New Hymn, "God's Sufficient Word"

Several months ago I was commissioned by Community Baptist Church in Greer, SC to write a new hymn in honor of the church's 30th anniversary, and particularly in honor of its founding pastor, Dr. David J. Whitcomb. I was asked to write on his foundational passage for pastoral ministry, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5. That's a passage that has shaped my own ministry, and I was thrilled by the opportunity to express its truth in a new text.

The text was taken by Peter Anglea, a gifted musician and a member of Community Baptist. Peter wrote a lovely, memorable tune for the piece. He was a joy to work with. The result of our collaboration is "God's Sufficient Word," which unpacks teaching from 2 Timothy 3-4 (and other passages) on the inerrant, profitable, sanctifying, and sufficient Word of God. Paul climaxes his doctrine of the Scriptures in 2 Timothy 4:2, commanding Timothy and every preacher since to "Preach the Word." Praise God for Pastor Whitcomb's faithful, conscientious ministry in which he has done that very thing.

Grace!

GOD'S SUFFICIENT WORD  (Text by Chris Anderson; Tune by Peter Anglea)

FULL PAGE / HALF PAGE / MP3

_____

Believe in God's inerrant Word,
Inspired and therefore pure.
Continue in the things you’ve learned,
For sacred Truth is sure.

Refrain:
Rejoice in God’s delightful Word
That satisfies the soul—
Far sweeter than the honeycomb,
And more desired than gold!

Submit to God's transforming Word
Which makes the foolish wise.
The living, piercing, healing Sword
Yields righteousness through Christ.

Mature through God's equipping Word
Until you're fully grown.
Prepared to serve your gracious Lord,
Now work to make Him known.

Depend on God's sufficient Word,
Which cannot be improved.
In light of judgment and reward,
Proclaim His changeless Truth.
